Solvent products include:

  • Glues
  • Dry-cleaning fluids
  • Aerosols
  • Strippers
  • Petrol
  • Test correction fluids
  • Gas lighter refills

How is it taken?

  • Sniffing primarily - often as a group activity. Most common between 12 and 16 year-olds
  • Put into poly bags and inhaled over whole mouth and nasal area
  • Aerosols are squirted down into the mouth and throat area.

What happens

  • The experience is similar to that of being drunk, as the user experiences light-headedness, dizziness and often hallucinations
  • Sickness and drowsiness may also be experienced and after wards it can be like having a hangover.

Possible consequences

  • Accidents may occur if sniffers occupy dangerous locations eg main road.If the sniffer slips into unconsciousness, the risk of choking is increased.
  • Suffocation is also a risk is solvents are sniffed in a plastic bag placed over the head.
