Heart Disease - Citizenship
HC01 Does school keep our hearts healthy? View this item
This lesson can be used either in a free-standing citizenship course or within science in schools where departments are contributing to the citizenship program.

The lesson asks students to investigate how the school’s provision for meals and sporting activities contributes to students ’wellbeing. The investigation can either be carried out in a single lesson or as a more expansive activity involving the School Council.
HC02 Is there a role for the law? View this item
The law protects us both from ourselves and others. Many of us have habits that lead to ill health - so should the law step in and control these habits?

Businesses produce foods which are full of sugar and fat - but we buy them. Should there be controls over the food that is produced? Many people still smoke, although we know that it is bad for many aspects of our health. Should cigarettes be banned?

The lesson asks students to consider these issues, having brainstormed ways in which the law does and could control the way we treat our hearts.

Human Genetics - Citizenship
GC01 Human genetics - explaining the issues View this item
The lesson asks students to create a leaflet, aimed at a specific audience, which puts a variety of points of view. The activity not only helps students to develop an understanding of this important social issue, but also encourages them to consider it from the points of view of people who have different opinions on the issue. This lesson can be used independently or as an introduction to Human Genetics: whose point of view?
GC02 Human genetics - whose point of view? View this item
The use of genetic research to help people overcome problems that result from malfunctioning genes or combination of genes from parents is much debated. Some people think that we should not interfere with nature, while others consider that scientific development should be used to benefit people who suffer, or might suffer from genetic complications.

This lesson asks students to consider the issues. This may involve them in arguing a point of view which is not necessarily their own. This helps them to develop an understanding of other peoples’ points of view and makes them think more carefully about their own.
